If enlightenment is what is driving you and consuming you above all else, then by all means pursue it with everything you’ve got.
The fact is though that the awakened ones are still relatively few and far between, and there are many, many sincere and dedicated seekers who spend decades in pursuit of this dream or ideal, but who never actually achieve it in spite of all their efforts.
I have reached a point where I am much more interested in how spiritual insight and understanding can help people live better lives NOW and find wholeness and peace in themselves NOW instead of in some faraway time which may never come.
I’m no longer interested in ‘non duality’ or ‘emptiness’ or ‘no-self’ or any of the standard spiritual tropes that may not actually lead to anything other than more concepts to get lost in. If the spiritual endeavour is to have to any real value, it has to work where we find ourselves here in our messy human lives and daily struggles and not in some idealised future.
So don’t talk to me about enlightenment unless you are burning with desire for it. Let’s talk instead about what makes a good and fulfilling life, a steady and integrated character, a peaceful heart and a deep knowing of who we really are in our totality. Then it matters not if enlightenment happens or doesn’t, for we will have already solved the riddle of our existence and come home to ourselves without the need for any overarching philosophy or major (but oh so unpredictable) mystical event.
We will simply be who we are in the naked truth of ourselves. And that my friends is more than enough.
Yes! Thank you for expressing this. It's really the stripping away, not the adding on, not working toward some "future" which of course is a fantasy because a future is nothing but a fantasy... it's simply the the here and now, the here and now. I am not sure if I'm finally able to live this because of age or because of all the reading, studying, meditating and honestyly I don't care. Just glad I am finally here.
Oh, how I love practicality! Thank you for this post! <3
